Advice

If I had to give one solid piece of advice that would help new Computer Skills students, it would be to make sure you know exactly what the assignment is before it's too late. That means either checking before leaving class or talking to someone during the day. The last thing you want is to procrastinate and then find out you don't know how to do something or don't understand the directions.

I like Spencer's web page because it has the most interesting and eventful pictures. Also, the colors do not clash. I also like Ellitt's page because it is easy to read and look at and is pretty interesting. Lastly, I like Bart's site because the pictures are interesting, and I found out interesting information that I didn't know already.

I like Xin's stumper because it is symmetrical and has a lot included in the picture. I also like Katie's picture because it is symmetrical and different from any picture I would have considered taking, which makes it interesting. Lastly, I liked Mary-Alice's stumper because it was a colorful and unique picture. It looked like something that might be in a calender.

PowerPoint Responses & Tips

The three presentations I liked best were:

1. Xin Ma's because of her sounds and appeals to senses other than sight.
2. Miti Matamoros' because of her creative irony.
3. Ellitt Braud's because it made me laugh.

Things to do in a PowerPoint
1. Be simple and to the point
2. Limit animations to when they are needed
3. Make everything easy to read with no distractions
4. Information slides must have applicable title

Things not to do in a PowerPoint
1. Force viewers to take more than a few seconds to read slides
2. Make text hard to read with distractions such as sound and animations
3. Leave off titles or even the title page

Internet and Copyright Infringment

When using anything from the Internet in one's own work, an image to be more specific, there are risks involved concerning copyright laws. These risks may include not citing a source or not asking the creator permission to use his or her work. An other's work may be used without permission under two general circumstances: when the work is being commented on and when the work is being summarized in reporting. However, in these instances there must be some sort of credit given to the original creator, rather than the information being adopted as the secondary party's own work. There are times when work can be used without citing the source or asking for permission to use it. This is the case when a work is in the public domain or when the information is supplied by the government. The public domain includes all government works and works specifically given to the public domain by the creator. Some older works are included as well, but caution must be used when determining whether an old work is in the public domain or not because sometimes it is difficult to be sure. Finally, there are times when using someone else's work must be preceded by the creator giving specific, written permission. If the use of someone else's work is premeditated rather than relatively spontaneous, permission is required. This means that if use of a work is planned in far enough advance to acquire permission, then it must be acquired. These are guidelines for when a work can be used without permission, with citation, and with permission.
